Saturn And My Childhood

I wondered how a celestial object might have a ring. It all sounded very mythical and quite unbelievable, to be frank. As I grew up, the curiosity built up, and I did accept the truth — yes, Saturn does have rings. Did I see them with my own eyes? No, but many pictures on the internet show the same. All the satellites sent, or the stupendously big telescopes, all say the same thing — the object that is 21 times the diameter of Earth looks so tiny, having a beautiful ring around it. The ring looks so enormous, yet its height is just 10 meters — thinner than a sheet of paper if you scale it down. Anyway, all the science may take a back seat; as a kid, it was always my dream to watch those rings in real time. As I was walking along the roadside this evening, it struck me — it’s October, and Saturn might be high above in the sky, the perfect time to spot it. So I just rushed to my room, took out my telescope, and pointed it toward it — boom! My dream came true. I witnessed the rings!!! ...

A Giant mysterious mirror!!

You all might have seen a Crescent moon, The illuminated part of the moon looks bright but we can also see the darker part of the moon, If you observe carefully, you can see the other part of the moon, but not as bright as the illuminated part (Cresent part of moon), even though sun has no part in illuminating it. Let me tell you, how we all can see that darker part of the moon on crescent moon day, it is caused by the sun's bright light reflecting off the earth's surface into the face of the moon. We even have a word for it, earthshine! So every time you see a crescent moon and a hint of a darker side of the moon, you are literally looking at the reflection of our earth, isn't it exciting to know? Next time, when you look at the sky remember you are acting as a gaint mirror !!

Sound of Universe

What if I tell you, that every one of us heard the sound of the birth of the universe? let me simplify this, you all might have heard the buzz or hiss sound when you try to change the channel on the radio, or FM mode on your phone. Have you ever thought about what it is? A major part of it is radio waves from your surroundings, but a tiny tiny part of it is, older than 13 billion years, yes you heard me right 13 billion years! As the electromagnetic waves produced at the birth of the universe have been traveling all long for the last 13.4 billion years, as space expands the shorter wavelength becomes longer wavelength, in short, the photons lose their energy in traveling, and boom, the longer wavelength means radio waves, and your phone or radio can receive the signals and make you eligible to hear those sounds. so next time when you turn on the radio, don't get irritated by the buzz, you are listening to the sound of the universe at its youngest stage! How wonderful it is...

TIME

What is time? you may think it is a stupid question to ask, but anyway, ask yourself what is time? Is it what your watch notifies or a calendar or seasons? or time is just a concept in our brain that never really exists? Before scientifically answering this question, let me simplify. Time is a single-direction thing, you can never go in the past. You can’t unscramble the egg, or unread my article. It is one direction for sure but we are not in command of it, It goes at one speed and can’t go backward or forward, yea yea I’m keeping complicated science away. just to avoid complications of time travel, let us be in real and try to get this term time in simple things. As I searched for the definition of time, one thing was sure, it is the most unknown of unknown things in this world. But plays a very vital role, in how we feel that time is very important, sometimes we want to escape, and sometimes we want to re-live it. Among all the things of entropy and time traveling we can make ...

Gamble ?

We all hated one chapter in maths, Probability! this always forced our brain to work a bit hard and we learned that our emotions won’t affect the outcome of the result, a coin always has two outcomes no matter what. I have one simple question for you all if you had a chance to win 100 rupees if a flip of a coin turns out to be head and you lose 100 rupees if the coin flips to tail. Would you take the risk of playing this game with me? Most probably no, why would you risk your 100 rupees? even if I don’t take this risk. But what if I offer 200 rupees every time you win (that is getting a head-on coin flip), and you lose 100 rupees if it turns out to be a tail? This is a little tricky, some of you might accept this bet or decline. Statistically after ‘n’ number of games you will be in profit no matter what. It might sound controversial as your brain might think what if you lose all of them, and end up in a loss but that doesn’t happen, more risk you take the more profit you g...

A story of a Tamil Brahmin boy, who failed in his degree!

G.H Hardy a well-known British mathematician received a letter, which was of 11 pages of complex mathematical theorems. At first, he thought it was another fraud letter he had received. After discussing with one of his colleagues at Cambridge university, he came to the conclusion that this letter was one hell of a genius work.   G.H.Hardy Back in India, almost a decade before the letter received at Cambridge, a Genius boy was roaming around the streets of Madras, finding it difficult to focus on all subjects of college. even his parents kept a constable to make sure this guy attends his class. The boy went on to fail in his most of subjects and failed to attain a college degree. But one thing about the boy was fascinating, he knew numbers better than any human being. He continued his obsession and wrote many papers and even tried to publish with the help of some mathematicians in India. On the 16th of Jan 1913, he finally wrote a letter to G.H. Hardy.  Hardy wanted to meet Thi...

Survivors Bias, Dropping out of college isn't that great idea!

Let me tell you the story of world war 2, British were losing their bomber aircraft at an increasing rate against the German army, but they desperately wanted to find a solution to this problem, So they analyzed all the air crafts that came back. They noted and found out the areas of the aircraft where most of the bullets were hit or damage happened, and they decided to armor those parts of the aircraft, sounds intuitive, isn’t it? But to their surprise, the applied mathematics department had a different plan (I was shocked by the fact that they had applied mathematics in the military) So Abraham Wald, based on his statistical research suggested the British military, Armor those parts of the aircraft where no damage is seen or observed, but this brought huge success in coming war days. The reason behind this counterintuitive decision was that they were only looking at the aircraft which returned. means that all the aircraft hit by German in different areas failed to return, so all surv...

Boredom isn't that bad

BOREDOM One day I got bored like many of us and googled how to get rid of boredom. There were many articles and videos. But then a thought struck me, is boredom that bad?  I researched a bit to know more, and it seems boredom isn’t that bad, let me tell you how. Boredom is an emotion from which we all tend to run away. We feel being busy all the time is a kind of badge of honor, for that moment it does feel like we are moving forward with our life. But deep down we are not spending time meaningfully. We fall into default systems, like our cell phones come with default settings. We as humans have some default systems in our life which need some modifications. when you waiting in line for food or money, waiting for your date to show up, waiting in the classroom for professors. What will you do? the most likely answers we get are to take out the phone and watch something or play some games, nobody wants to get bored. When you are bored your mind wanders and does not conce...

A STORY OF AN UNKOWN GIRL.

OCTOBER 5 – 1954 Scott enters the graveyard, he was in his 70s, his posture was firm and he was masculine. he had two deep scars on his face, which were signs of his tough life as a soldier. He was neatly dressed; his shoes were well polished. his eyes were filled with deep despair. Stepping towards the grave, holding a bottle of wine, he went into thoughts. He was the man who had participated in the world’s two greatest wars which took place in human history! JULY 28- 1914 No historian can forget this day. It was the day World War 1 began, which eventually took millions of lives.  Wars happen because we as human beings fail to withstand our so-called title of intelligent creatures of the earth. Robert Scott was a young and brave soldier who was fighting not because he was eager to kill the opponent but wanted to shield his people from any danger. He was a kind man but once he was on a battlefield nothing mattered to him, he was mercy less. OCTOBER 5 - 1914 Scott an...

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change  Definition I will start with the very basic question of what is climate, it’s not like the weather which is limited to short-term change while climate represents a very long period like 30years or more. From the formation of earth is from the past 4.5 billion years, Earth has gone through many climate changes due to reasons like obliquity (the slight tilting of earth towards the sun) or the impact of a big asteroid, earth has seen ice ages and much mass extinction before. But why we are worried about climate change this time? Is really climate change happening? And finally, are we the direct cause of the catastrophe? I will answer these questions clearly with fundamental examples. Greenhouse gases  We may get the question heating of the earth is mainly due to the sun, why do we are worried about the greenhouse gases more? Let me take the example of our solar system, the planet Venus is the hottest among all, but it’s not the nearest planet to the sun, if only S...

And he continued his journey and became the world champion and defended it 5 times, nothing less spectacular. Vishy inspired the whole generation now in INDIA there are many chess federations and currently, we have 69 grandmasters, the whole credit goes to one man. The subtle art of not giving fuck -summary

D on’t read this until you are ready to face the reality, sounds a bit harsh but the truth is harsh sometimes and helps us to grow into better people than we are now!! don’t get a bad idea by the title. the book is totally opposite to what the title says, you have to give fuck to certain things. Unlike many other self-help books that help you find certain tools to achieve your goals, this book talks about what goals one should have in life. This is one of the greatest self-help books I have read, I noted down the things that sounded more important to me in this book. CHAPTER 1   DON'T TRY T he idea of success is very different for the author of this book, success doesn’t mean a lot of money and fame, it’s about values and the way one leading their life, the values you really care about. So one should stop trying to be successful in a materialistic way as the author says “negativity is the path of positivity” only suffering will let you know the truth and you learn what it take...
